Man held on multiple charges following supermarket theft

A 38-year-old Sparks man struggled with store security before fleeing the Safeway store at Round Hill, high-centering his car on a rock during the getaway and was found hiding behind a log last week, a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy stated.

Berry Estrada was booked into Douglas County Jail at $178,500 bail on a litany of charges including suspicion of burglary, robbery, battery, obstructing an officer, assault with a deadly weapon and threats, the deputy stated.

Estrada was confronted by store personnel. He allegedly pulled a screwdriver on a 70-year-old security guard before fleeing into his 1993 Ford Thunderbird, the deputy stated.

While backing up he high-centered the vehicle on a rock, then ran into the woods near Highway 50. He was arrested soon after.

The list of stolen items read like a shopping list: two bottles of Sauza tequila, a bottle of Gentleman Jack bourbon, Jagermeister, a bottle of Bacardi Gold, a bottle of Cointreau, E&J brandy, Axe body spray, a Lake Tahoe T-shirt, an Orange County Chopper coloring book, two packages of Oberta beef jerk, a Kodak disposable camera, a jar of Skippy peanut butter, a red pepper and an Oral B toothbrush.
