Man in critical condition after Hope Valley motorcycle crash

A 52-year-old San Mateo, Calif. man spent the night trapped under his motorcycle after he crashed into a tree off of State Route 88 east of Hope Valley, police said.

Michael MacCullough was listed in critical condition Wednesday at Washoe Medical Center. California Highway Patrol officers said MacCullough’s wife reported her husband missing early Wednesday morning. She said he had gone to Alpine County the day before on a fishing trip and had not returned.

As the woman was reporting the incident to the Alpine County Sheriff’s Department around 9:30 a.m., a witness called police and reported hearing MacCullough calling for help.

MacCullough told CHP officers that he was traveling west on State Route 88 between 9 and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when he believes he fell asleep. The motorcycle left the north edge of the road and traveled down a 21-foot embankment before hitting the tree. MacCullough was airlifted to Washoe Medical Center with a possible spinal cord injury.
