Man in serious condition after being run over

Bradley Foster

An 83-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was seriously injured at 8:45 Sunday morning when he was hit by a car on Lyons ave. outside St Theresa Catholic Church.

Leo Valdez was flown to Washoe Medical Center where he was listed in serious but stable condition, after he was run over by John Cefalu, 64, a South Lake Tahoe businessman.

A doctor at the scene told police Valdez had broken at least two ribs, fractured his femur, and sustained serious head injuries.

A witness saw Valdez slip and fall behind Cefalu’s truck as he was backing into the street. The witness said he tried to get Cefalu’s attention by honking his horn but failed.

Distracted by two dogs in the back of his truck, Cefalu did not see Valdez, and didn’t realize he had hit him. After backing over him, Cefalu pulled forward and ran over Valdez a second time with his right rear wheel.

Cefalu told police he thought he had run over mounded snow, but soon realized what had happened.
