Man injured in church parking lot still in serious condition

The 83-year-old South Lake Tahoe man run over outside St. Theresa Catholic Church on Lyons Avenue last Sunday morning was still listed in serious condition at Washoe Medical Center over the weekend.

Leo Valdez was hit after he slipped and fell behind a truck driven by John Cefalu, 64, a South Lake Tahoe businessman who was leaving church.

A hospital spokesman said Valdez is stable but would not describe his injuries. A doctor on the scene diagnosed Valdez as having broken at least two ribs and a leg, and sustained serious head injuries, according to a South Lake Tahoe Police report.

A witness saw Valdez slip and fall behind Cefalu’s truck as Cefalu was backing into the street. The witness said he tried to get Cefalu’s attention by honking his horn but failed.

Distracted by two dogs in the back of his truck, Cefalu did not see Valdez, and didn’t realize he had hit him. After backing over him, Cefalu pulled forward and ran over Valdez a second time with his right rear wheel.

Cefalu told police he thought he had run over mounded snow, but soon realized what had happened.
