Man pleads not guilty to eight felony counts of sex assault of a young girl

by Gregory Crofton, Tribune staff writer

A 39-year-old from South Lake Tahoe who pleaded not guilty to eight felony counts of sexually assaulting a young girl is expected in court this morning for a preliminary hearing.

Charles Segroves, former assistant seventh-grade boys’ basketball coach at South Tahoe Middle School, could be sentence to more than 40 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

The continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 is the most serious charge filed against him. It carries a maximum penalty of 16 years in prison, a $10,000 fine and an order to register as a sex offender.

A friend of Segroves told police about the sex assaults the afternoon of July 8. Police said they stopped Segroves’ car at Park Avenue and Stateline after he finished a shift as a floor employee at Harveys Resort Hotel/Casino and allegedly found “photographic evidence of sexual assaults” inside his car.
