Marine research group needs donations

With the year coming to an end and tax season just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about ways to get tax deductions. Donating to Marine Research & Education, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), is the perfect tax break opportunity. Individuals who wish to donate may obtain a tax deduction of 40 to 100 percent by using the organization’s 501(c)(3) tax status. The organization willingly accepts donations of cash, cars, boats and stock. With the support of the community Marine Research & Education can continue to provide the community with an excellent, hands-on environmental education program.

Marine Research & Education is focused on teaching the importance of protecting Lake Tahoe’s ecosystem and the need for conservation throughout the Tahoe Basin. School classes kindergarten through 12th-grade, community organizations and adult groups from around the lake as well as outside the basin have enjoyed the hands-on program. The program consists of two segments: an “on-shore” classroom and an “on-the-water” classroom aboard the vessel Prophet. “On-shore” the participants learn about the formation of the lake, basin history and the basin’s food web. “On-the-water” the students measure lake clarity, view plankton through a microscope and play with the minnow touch-tank while enjoying the scenic surroundings.

To keep this program going the support of the community is essential. For more information regarding donations or the program call Marine Research & Education at (530) 544-7490.
