Marksmanship team wins trophy

The South Tahoe High School Varsity Air Rifle Marksmanship team won the league championship trophy in competition against Carson, Churchill County, Incline and Reed high schools. South Tahoe, Carson and Incline finished league play with identical records of six wins and two losses, but South Tahoe defeated both teams in a shoot-off for the league championship.

Earlier in the year four-member teams from South Tahoe placed second and third in the Carson Invitational Tournament, at the Top Gun Invitational, South Tahoe shooters placed first in the novice division and second in the open division at the Top Gun Invitational.

Team members included team captain and senior Larry Frye, juniors Chad Cason, Mary Griffin, Matt Hock, Robert Mitchell, Ben Yang, sophomores Luis Gomez, Katie Raschke, Nicole Rider, Jordan Sharpe and freshmen Nate Buffa and Ransom Burford. Cadets Griffin and Hock tied for the end-of-season high-average award.



The team is coached by military retirees Lt. Cmdr. Matt Williams and Senior Chief Darwin Sharpe. Shooters compete in both sporter and precision air rifle matches.
