Marriott, South Lake Tahoe ink final hotel pact

A Marriott time-share hotel, an intermodal transit center and a Cecil’s Market will be constructed on the Lake Tahoe Inn and Red Carpet Inn sites in spring 2001.

Marriott Ownership Resort Inc. gave the South Tahoe Redevelopment Agency official notice that it will construct the $129 million, 409-unit weekly time-share hotel at the Lake Tahoe Inn site.

“This pulls the trigger on proceeding with the development this spring,” said City Manager David Childs.

Marriott will loan the city $3 million dollars for purchase of the Lake Tahoe Inn and the Red Carpet Inn sites. The city will also use proposition 116 funds, $6.5 million of state funding designated for transportation, for purchase of the property and construction of the transportation center.

Although the redevelopment agency is making offers to the Lake Tahoe Inn and Red Carpet Inn, Redevelopment Manager Jaye Von Klug said that the property might need to be taken by eminent domain.

The intermodal transit center will combine casino shuttle services, buses and trolleys all under one roof.

“This will make transit easier for both locals and tourists to use in the future, because it will be easier to work with,” Von Klug said. “The hub of this will be the transit center in the Park Avenue project.”
