Mary Burns

A celebration of life memorial service will take place today, Aug. 31, for Mary Geddes Burns, who died Aug. 26, 2004. She was 72.

Mary was better known as Molly, Mom and proudly, Nana. Molly was one of the best friends a person could have. She was born June 23, 1932, at Glascow, Scotland, and was raised during the Depression and World War II. It was in Scotland where she met and later married Gilbert Burns on Dec. 17, 1954. They moved to Santa Monica, Calif., in 1967 with their baby daughter, Gail, looking for a better life.

After Gail started school, Molly went to work as a PBX operator at Santa Monica Hospital. Molly and Gilbert moved to South Lake Tahoe in April 1996, when their first grandchild was born. She cherished the role of grandmother and enjoyed taking care of her grandson and later, her granddaughter, before their school years started.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gilbert Burns; daughter, Gail Burns Harnett; son-in-law, Patrick Harnett; and grandchildren, Spencer and Kristen Harnett, all of South Lake Tahoe; nephew, John Keaveney of Culver City, Calif.; and brother, John Collins of Bathgate, Scotland.

A celebration of Molly’s life will begin at 2 p.m. Aug. 31 at McFarlane’s Mortuary, 887 Emerald Bay Road.
