McDermitt has Whittell’s number at Comstock Classic

McDermitt High School swept both games from the Whittell Warriors in the opening round of the Comstock Classic on Thursday in Virginia City.

The Bulldogs broke open a tight game in the second half with offensive rebounding and penetration to win the boys’ game, 60-42.

“In the second half we allowed them middle penetration, and they were taking advantage of driving and dishing,” said Whittell coach Tyler Rose, whose team trailed by four points at the break.



Junior Blake Werle led the Warriors with nine points and eight rebounds, including four offensive. Junior guard Alex Vogt delivered seven points and five rebounds; Kevin Novotny had six points and Michael Koskin contributed five points and five boards. Whittell (1-5) is scheduled to play twice today, with its first game at 11:30 a.m.

The Whittell girls also lost their opening-round game to McDermitt, 37-20.



Senior Isabel Concha-Foley led Whittell with eight points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Emily Harris and sophomore Nina Jimenez were active for the Warriors (2-4). Harris had four points, three rebounds and three steals, while Jimenez collected two points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Whittell will play its first of two games today at 10 a.m.
