McGwire misses second game after wife gives birth to triplets

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Cardinals batting coach Mark McGwire missed his second straight game, a day after his wife gave birth to triplets.

Manager Tony La Russa said Wednesday he had talked with McGwire, who reported good health for his wife, Stephanie, and three infant daughters who had yet to be named. McGwire has two other young children with his second wife, and La Russa said he has enough to do right now.

The Cardinals have a day off Thursday and La Russa indicated McGwire would be back Friday for the start of a three-game series against the Brewers.

Mike Aldrete, the team’s second hitting coach, again took on added responsibilities for the finale of a three-game series against the Reds.
