Meals come on wheels

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.

Meals on wheels, the El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program’s home delivered meal service is looking for volunteers to deliver hot meals to the homebound elderly.

The program, which has been running since 1989, has five routes that serve the South Lake Tahoe Basin. A sixth route is needed to meet the growing number of requests from homebound seniors.

Volunteers are required to drive one day a week on a route which normally takes an hour to complete.

Hot meals are delivered and friendships are developed.

“For a lot of these people, we’re the only ones they see all day long,” said volunteer Jean Wannell of South Lake Tahoe. “It’s also a good opportunity to keep track of their condition.”

Piping hot meals are packed into food containers at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center and are ready for pickup by 10:30 a.m. After loading the containers into their vehicles, volunteers hit the streets, bringing nutritious meals to frail elders who aren’t able to get out on their own.

Mothers with young children are welcome to volunteer. Husbands and wives are invited to do the community service together and service clubs and churches are also encouraged to organize teams to get involved. Interested persons can contact the South lake Tahoe Senior Center for more information. (530) 573-3130.
