Measure J headed for approval

Emily Aughinbaugh, Tribune staff writer

A little more than 19,000 El Dorado County residents voted yes on Measure J as of press time Tuesday, with 149 out of 208 precincts reporting.

Measure J is an initiative to clean up Measure Y, which passed overwhelmingly two years ago.

An amendment to Measure Y authored by the Board of Supervisors, Measure J approved the use of county tax revenues on new commercial development for roadway improvements.

Measure Y contains five policies that stipulate funding for improvements to over-congested roads caused by sprawling development, primarily on the West Slope.

Conrad Montgomery, county planning director, said the current policy encompasses all types of new development, and Measure J will allow the county to only use commercial development sales tax revenue. Montgomery said Measure J will allow the county to fund roadways, primarily on the West Slope, that are in danger of becoming gridlocked.

“It will allow some of the commercial projects, in especially the Missouri Flat area, to move one step forward toward being built that will greatly assist the economy of El Dorado County,” Supervisor Dave Solaro said. “It will also help support our infrastructure, because we are duly lacking in commercial properties that generate sales tax.”
