Meeting to discuss Internet access scheduled at South Tahoe Library

Improving access to the Internet at South Lake Tahoe Library is the focus of the Friends of the Library program “Connecting Tahoe” on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. at the library.

The library has provided a connection to the Internet for many years. Beginning with nine public computers, service was later expanded to include WiFi. People could then bring in their own devices such as phones, tablets and laptops to access the Internet. With greater use every year, the connection installed 20 years ago is no longer adequate with the result that service has become slower to the point of frustration for library patrons. A key challenge is financial. Installing a fiber-optic line to provide the amount of capacity needed with many users online is very expensive. The potential fruits of the information age are many, such as access to information only recently limited to a select few. The key word is access – rapid, easy-to use-access. This is what our library needs to be able to provide for all local residents and visitors. Heidi Hill Drum and Bev Ducey from Tahoe Prosperity Center will share that organization’s efforts to improve high-speed Internet and cellphone service throughout our area. Branch Manager Katharine Miller will then discuss various options for improving Internet service at the library and possible means of funding. Refreshments will be served.
