Memorial Day services planned for today

Stand and remember veterans who offered their lives to the United States, that’s what they plan to do.

“It’s something we shouldn’t forget,” said Paul Lyman, commander of South Lake Tahoe’s American Legion Stella Van Dyke Johnson Post 795. “They deserve our respect.”

The post will hold Memorial Day Services Monday at 11 a.m. at Happy Homestead Cemetery. The services is expected to last about 45 minutes and feature the singing of Margo Osti, a former mayor at South Lake Tahoe.

She will be joined at the ceremony by the Legionnaires, Auxiliary Ladies and Sons of the Legion and the South Lake Tahoe Police Honor Guard. Also present will be representatives from Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps League, Navy Junior R.O.T.C. and Boy Scouts of America.

Lyman said everyone is invited to the ceremony, which honors all veterans whether on active duty, retired, deceased or missing in action.

Cake and coffee will be served at the post, which is located at 2748 U.S. Highway 50, after the ceremony.

Lyman has been commander of Post 795 for three years. He served with the U.S. Air Force in Korea from 1950 to 1954.

“It’s a time to honor the people who went in to keep our country free and they lost their lives doing that,” he said. “When you’re in combat, it’s something you never forget.”
