Men arrested for target practice in Clear Creek

Two California men who were target shooting in the woods near Old Clear Creek Road were arrested Friday after a resident heard bullets hit a house and ricochet nearby.

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies responded to a shots fired call at 1:20 p.m. in the 3700 block of Highway 50 near Old Clear Creek Road in north Douglas County.

Sgt. Jim Halsey said a woman in the rural area reported hearing several rounds fired. She also heard noises outside the house which indicated bullets may have struck or ricocheted.

Deputies found four men target shooting in the woods. Two had been shooting rifles, a third had a pellet gun, and the fourth had not been firing.

Halsey said the men were shooting at trees and did not have a safe backdrop behind their target. Several bullets discharged from the rifles continued into the nearby rural residential area.

Lance Caro, 21, and Daniel Dauz, 20, both of Vallejo, Calif., were arrested for discharging a firearm where a person might be endangered.

The gross misdemeanor carries a sentence of up to one year in jail. They also were charged with destruction of property, a misdemeanor.

The two were booked in Douglas County Jail on $3,137 bail each.

Halsey said the rifles used by Caro and Dauz, both medium caliber bolt-action rifles, were booked as evidence.
