Middle school is vandalized

Jeff Munson

A vandalism spree inside South Tahoe Middle School sometime over the weekend that resulted in at least $80,000 in damage remains under investigation, authorities said Wednesday.

Damage was done to several classrooms and was discovered when a teacher came in to work on Sunday. Equipment that was heavily damaged or destroyed included computers, audio and visual technology, and desks. The vandals also used fire extinguishers in the classrooms, police said.

“There was quite a lot vandalism to equipment. Everything combined was reported to be $80,000 in damages,” South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Marty Hale said.

Police officers are following leads in the case, including surveillance footage.

According to information on the school district’s Web site, someone drove around the back of the campus and broke into a classroom Friday, totally destroying it, and stealing or damaging more than 33 laptop computers and carts. Facilities Director Steve Morales said he would be tightening up the campus with additional fencing and more security cameras if necessary.
