Mikasa building for fire victims opens, generous donations pour in
The old “Mikasa Building” is being used for the Angora fire survivors to come to for donated items. After coordinated efforts by many different parties, a lease was signed for the Mikasa Building, located at 2011 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
A resounding thank you to all who aided in the successful completion of the lease ” the Garfinkle Family who graciously leased the building for only $1 a month for three months; El Dorado County District 5 Supervisor Norma Santiago; Kathay Lovell, mayor of South Lake Tahoe, and all the city and county employees who went above and beyond the call of duty for assisting in the relief plans; Mr. Mansoor Alyeshmerni who generously funded the lease deposit; El Dorado County Foundation ” Joe Harn, for the insurance retainer; The Loyal Order of the Moose #1632 board of directors for the help with the lease; many thank yous to Rus Wilson who helped in the spear-heading of the project, and the many others who worked tirelessly to help with this worthy cause.
The Community Care Center of Tahoe has been formed to assist and help the survivors of the Angora fire rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the devastating fires that occurred in South Lake Tahoe during the month of June 2007.
There has been a tremendous outpouring from our wonderful community and other surrounding areas. Their mission is to help with the humanitarian needs, including food, clothing, household goods, furniture, appliances and other items that were lost in the fire.
The site will be used to accumulate, assemble and distribute the donations over the next three months of the lease. The goal of the center is also to be a gathering place for the Angora fire survivors where they can have a place of belongings and feel comfortable.
As of Oct. 12 the center has helped 42 families; over 110 people; and needs assessment appointments have been scheduled for another 22 families.
Many items have been donated. Most recent has been a donation of new blankets, hats and jackets from the Powder House, MV Sports and The Duck Company, valued at over $5,000. Yesterday, a donation of brand new winter clothing and winter jackets was donated by Zahbuu Sportswear. Owners, Leslie Campbell and Debbie Chase have placed the value of the clothing at over $350,000.
Raleys Minden store director Hank Paxson, donated the Raley’s truck for the pick-up and delivery of all the goods. The center is not accepting any more clothing, except for winter clothing, hats, gloves and snow shovels.
Still needed are non-perishable food items and furniture in good condition, as well as monetary donations for utilities and other expenses. All charitable monetary donations are tax deductible and should be made out to the Moose Lodge #1632- side-marked – for The Community Care Center, and may either be brought to the “Mikasa Building” or mailed to the Moose Lodge, 961 Eloise Ave., South Lake Tahoe, CA. 96150.
The Center will be open for Angora fire survivors Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment, through the end of the first week of December. Then, the Center will hold a public “donation sale” of any remaining items. The funds raised will be donated to the long-term recovery organization, CDRC- Community Disaster Resource Center for the Survivors.
The Center would like any Angora fire survivors, homeowners and tenants to set up a needs assessment appointment, if they have not already done so. They are also still seeking volunteers to help staff the Center.
