Mild weather early this week
South Lake Tahoe residents should get a short reprieve from the heat and thunderstorms that provided the basin with a lightning show Friday and flooded the Carson Valley Saturday.
The forecast for today and tomorrow calls for sunny skies and high temperatures of 76 and 74 degrees, according to the Weather Channel.
Isolated thunderstorms are expected through the week starting Wednesday, coinciding with a warming trend and higher humidity.
The police scanner came alive Friday afternoon, with fire- and lightning-related calls spanning from Tahoe Mountain to Barton Memorial Hospital. A nearby lightning strike tripped the Barton alarm, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department reported.
Shortly before the rain fell Friday evening, lightning strikes could be seen cracking across the ridge near Freel Peak, prompting many walkers along Highway 50 to stop and watch the marvel of Mother Nature.
Lightning is the most common cause of fire.
