Minister’s Forum: Faith means giving up control

It has been amazing to see how God works in the life of the church. For the past two months, it seems that my sermons have all had to do with taking God out of the boxes that we human beings like to put God in. It’s a real problem.

See, human beings like to have control over everything in their lives. We like to have all our ducks in a row. I know I do, that’s for sure. And the area in my life where I like to have control is in my preaching.

I have always written my sermons out before Sunday came along. I needed that security of knowing that everything that I was going to talk about was written out before me. I liked knowing that I wasn’t going to mess up and look the fool – to my own folly. God has recently reminded me that perhaps I wasn’t trusting God to help me proclaim the gospel. That maybe I was putting God in a box and trying to take control over the uncontrollable to make me feel better.

What I’ve learned is this: Faith is not belief, and belief is not faith. Rather, faith is putting our trust in God. Faith means choosing to not have to have control over everything in our lives and letting God work through us and in us. And when we do turn our lives over to God and trust in God’s promises, then will we be able to experience the freedom that God promises us through Jesus Christ. Till next time, I hope to see you around. God bless.
