Miracle unfolds for single mom who lost job

CARSON CITY, Nev. – When Kimberly Sanchez lost her job eight days before Christmas, she didn’t know how she was going to make it.

“I’m a single mother of a 7-year-old son, and I didn’t even know what I was going to do about rent, let alone Christmas,” said Sanchez, a 37-year Carson City resident.

But what she’s calling a Christmas miracle unfolded this past week when two friends, Darrin and Megan Sloan, heard of her plight and went to work.

“It was just one of those things – I couldn’t enjoy Christmas with my own family, knowing a 7-year-old boy wouldn’t have one,” said Darrin Sloan.

Sloan, a sergeant with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, sent out a text to his co-workers and, within four minutes, had received an overwhelming response.

From there, the donations grew until Christmas was the last thing Sanchez needed to worry about.

“They’d gone shopping and bought over $400 worth of toys, including a bicycle, and had them all wrapped from Santa. Then they gave me a gift card for $600,” Sanchez said, her voice breaking.

“I was so surprised. I just thought that this was the most wonderful Christmas story. They told me not to worry, and I regained my faith that there are good people out there. All I could do was just cry,” she said.

“I consider this a Christmas miracle, and I’m still kind of numb. It’s just incredible. How grateful and blessed I am, and so happy for my son.”

Sloan said he hopes this will become an annual event for the Sheriff’s Department supervisors’ association.

“I’m thinking we could adopt family every year,” he said.
