Monday’s forecast: Cold and unsettled weather today and this week

A cold pattern with a series of upper low pressure systems dropping south from the Pacific Northwest will bring below normal temperatures and periods of snow this week.

Scattered snow showers today with afternoon high temperatures in the mid 20s around the lake and upper teens at the 8000 foot resort level.

Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are forecast at lake level with 3 to 6 inches above 7,000 feet by this evening. Lows tonight are expected to drop into the single digits under cloudy skies with continued scattered snow showers.

Little change in this pattern over the next several days will see more snow showers and below normal temperatures. Highs Tuesday will reach the mid to upper 20s around the lake with lows around 10 degrees.

Given the showery nature of this pattern snow fall amounts will be localized with snow fall rates of 2 to 3 inches an hour possible in some heavier snow bands or showers.

The very cold air will also result in dry powder snow with snow to water ratios of 18 to 1 on average and total accumulations up to a foot at lake level and up to 2 feet possible above 7,000 feet by the end of the week.

Travelers should check for local road restrictions before departing with rapidly changing conditions. Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.
