Monday’s forecast: dry and cold today, milder days ahead this week

The storm which blasted across the Tahoe area Sunday morning left 1 to 2 feet of new snow at lake level and up to 3 feet in the higher elevations.

Snow drifts up to 4 feet were common as winds were clocked over 150 mph along the Sierra crest with the cold frontal passage at 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

Tahoe residents will get a breather this week as the jet stream pushes further north across the Pacific Northwest. A cold air mass has settled into the area today in the wake of Sundays cold front with highs expected to stay in the mid to upper 20s around the lake under partly cloudy skies and light north winds. Clearing skies tonight will allow overnight temperatures to drop into the single digits most areas with some below zero readings possible in the sheltered valleys around Truckee and South Lake Tahoe.

A little milder day is expected Tuesday as the flow shifts to a more westerly direction allowing afternoon readings to climb into the mid 30s under partly cloudy skies. A weak frontal system is forecast to brush across the Northern Sierra Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with no significant snow fall expected in the Tahoe area.
