Los Angeles and San Francisco hip-hop join forces Friday, when Gift of Gab and Pigeon John step up to the mic at MontBleu.

Born Timothy Parker, Gift of Gab has been a fixture on the Northern California hip-hop scene for years.

He is best known as half of Blackalicious, a Sacramento hip-hop duo he formed with DJ and producer Chief Xcel in 1992. He is also a member of Quannum Projects, a San Francisco-based hip-hop collective that also includes Xcel, DJ Shadow, Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker.

Gift of Gab released his third solo album, “The Next Logical Progression” in 2012, shortly after suffering kidney failure and receiving a kidney transplant. In July of that year, Blackalicious re-released its 1994 album “Melodica” and also announced plans on an upcoming record release.

Los Angeles rapper Pigeon John will join Gift of Gab Friday.

Born John Kenneth Dunkin in Omaha, Pigeon John moved to Inglewood, Calif., at age 5. He began rapping at open mic nights in the area as a teenager. He worked with fellow rapper B-Twice as hip-hop duo Brainwash Projects in the early ‘90s and formed hip-hop collective L.A. Symphony in 1997 with B-Twice and others.

Pigeon John released his fifth studio album, “Dragon Slayer,” in 2010.

The rapper is currently at work mixing his next album, titled “Encino Man,” with a release anticipated this year.
