Motorcyclist injured in accident

A motorcyclist sustained serious injuries Saturday when he lost control of his motorcycle and slid underneath an Isuzu Trooper, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

Darby Beetham, of Pinole, Calif., was driving a Buell motorcycle eastbound on U.S. Highway 50 near the intersection of South Upper Truckee Road at about 1:40 p.m.

Witnesses told CHP officers that Beetham was attempting to pass stopped traffic by driving – in excess of 50 mph – in the right-hand turn lane of U.S. Highway 50 when he crossed paths with the Trooper, which was attempting to turn left onto South Upper Truckee.

Not being able to stop in time, he laid the motorcycle down on the pavement and skid underneath the sport utility vehicle, CHP Officer Ken Tidwell said.

“He slid under the car, which had to be jacked up in order to get him out of there,” he said. “Had he not been wearing a helmet, he would have died.”

Beetham was transported by Care Flight helicopter to the intensive care unit at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. As of Sunday, he was listed in serious but stable condition with injuries to his back.

The driver of the Trooper, Wanda Perschnick, of Tahoe Paradise, was not injured.

Tidwell said an investigation of the crash is under way and it doesn’t appear that Perschnick is at fault.
