Movement Improvement: Cross training, Tahoe-style

Here I am going on two years living in Meyers. Since my first week in town, I took up a new sport with the purchase of my awesome mountain bike. After my first mountain bike season, leading into my return to snowboarding, I started to see what this cross training thing could really do. Talk about motivation!

When my second mountain bike season started last year, I was determined to push harder and get fitter to make myself a better snowboarder. Well it worked. As I got better at climbing, and my downhill, I saw my calves develop like they never have before. I had new endurance, not only cardio, but in my legs overall.

When snowboarding season started this past year, my transition was better than ever before. All those intimidating traverses at Heavenly became manageable. No more burn out in my calves from holding my edge so long. Not only that, but my legs had more power to allow me better control and speed on my snowboard … nice to be able to keep up with my friends! Snowboarding is my love, but mountain biking is becoming a close second.

And there are more things to do in Tahoe aside from mountain biking and snowboarding. There are plenty of options for cross training, such as paddle boarding, kayaking, long boarding, road biking, hiking, backpacking, etc. Cross training has some great advantages. Working your body in different ways allows you to build muscle, strength, endurance, and even core stability, so our different sports can complement each other. It also gives our bodies a chance to rest from being worked the same way over and over again, so we don’t get overworked and at risk for injuries. It’s kind of like how farming is supposed to be. Crops are meant to be rotated in order to replenish the soil with nutrients, otherwise the soil just gets stripped of all its nutrients when the same crop is planted year after year, leading to a crop of lesser and lesser nutritional value.

So think about adding paddleboarding into your mix for a little more balance and core stability work, which will help for riding the powder when it finally returns next season. Kayaking for more upper body, core and oblique strength and power.
