TRUCKEE, Calif. – With the five-year anniversary of the Angora fire barely in the rear view mirror, regional crews Monday afternoon teamed up to contain a brush fire in Eastern Truckee that one official said could have been a lot worse.

The Truckee Fire Protection District was dispatched to a report of a 30 foot by 30 foot fire shortly before 3:30 p.m. north of Glenshire Drive, roughly a half-mile east of Highland Avenue, said Gene Welch, public information officer for the district.

Crews from Truckee Fire, Calfire, U.S. Forest Service, the Squaw Valley Fire Department and Northstar Fire Protection District were able to contain the fire – which was proceeding quickly uphill – to three acres, Welch said.

Officials closed down Glenshire Drive to help battle the fire; as of 5:30 p.m., one lane had been reopened to allow through traffic. It should take crews another hour or so to mop up the incident, Welch said.

The cause is still being investigated, he said.

“Conditions today were extreme due to low moisture and low humidity and high winds,” Welch said. “Just one little spark could have been what started the fire.”

Monday’s fire occurred under red flag conditions – the same conditions on June 24, 2007, when the Angora fire was ignited. The blaze, which started from an illegal campfire, eventually destroyed 242 residences and 67 commercial structures and scorched 3,100 acres of land in South Lake Tahoe.
