Mulvey pitches Aces past Beavers

PORTLAND – Kevin Mulvey scattered four hits and allowed just two eighth-inning runs, leading Reno to a 5-2 victory over the Portland Beavers on Wednesday night at PGE Park.

Doug Deeds put Reno on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly, after Mark Hallberg led off the inning with a triple. The Aces tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Carlos Corporan, before Brandon Allen broke the game open with a two-run homer off the right-field foul pole, extending Reno’s lead to 4-0. Pedro Ciriaco added a run-scoring single, which was more than enough for Mulvey.

Mulvey (5-6) was masterful throughout the game, striking out seven and walking just one before handing the ball to the Aces’ bullpen in the eighth. Zach Kroenke tossed the final 1 2/3 innings to preserve the victory for the Aces.

Beavers’ starter Josh Geer took the loss, surrendering five runs – four earned – and eight hits over seven innings of work.
