Windjammers Yacht Club’s 34th annual Southern Crossing race finally set sail Saturday, Aug. 20. Apres Ski won the local club’s annual long-distance race, which was postponed from its typical June date due to strong winds.

The change in date limited the Southern Crossing’s fleet to eight boats from an original 20-plus, and a lack of wind Saturday allowed only five to finish. Of that group, the Moore 24 skippered by Lynn Woodward won with a corrected time of 5 hours, 7 minutes and 31 seconds, and a margin of just more than 14 minutes.

Apres Ski had a finishing time that was third overall, but its PHRF rating of 156 led to the top corrected time. Dianne (Express 27) placed second, and Vol de Nuit (Beneteau First 10) came in third, while the fastest finish time went to Wicked Sister — a Farr 36 that completed the course just after 4:40 p.m.

The latest installment of the club’s Wednesday Night Beer Can Races featured 12 boats in the water Wednesday, Aug. 24. Hot Rod (J/80) won Wednesday’s race with a corrected time of 53:04.4, 16 minutes ahead of second-place Dianne.

In addition to its weekly Beer Can Races held Wednesdays through Oct. 5, Windjammers Yacht Club has three more races on its 2016 calendar. For more information, visit http://www.tahoewindjammers.com.
