Name of pedestrian killed Friday released

Police have released the name of a man who was killed by an alleged drunken driver on U.S. Highway 50 Friday night.

South Lake Tahoe resident John Carleton, 51, died after being struck by a vehicle in front of the Taco Bell on Highway 50 about 6:45 p.m., according to police.

The driver of the vehicle, 49-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident Gregory Stearns, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving on a suspended license following the crash.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Autopsy results for Carleton could take several weeks, said South Lake Tahoe police Sgt.. Shannon Laney.
