National forest seeks feedback of off-roading

Gregory Crofton, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Eldorado National Forest officials want public suggestions regarding its off-highway vehicle management program.

Every year, Eldorado staff apply for grant money to maintain trails, signing, patrols and law enforcement. This year, officials expect to also apply for money to construct a toilet for people who visit the Rubicon and Ellis four-wheel-drive trails.

They also plan to apply for money to maintain the Silver Bear snowmobile trail system and to manage snowmobile use near Desolation and Mokelumne wilderness areas.

Eldorado is a 600,000-acre public forest, 100,000 acres of which make up Desolation Wilderness where no vehicles are allowed. Eldorado reaches west to Georgetown and Pollock Pines and east to the edge of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Written suggestions are due May 20. Letters should be mailed to Lester Lubetkin, recreation officer, Eldorado National Forest, 100 Forni Road, Placerville, CA 95667.

An open house for the public to discuss grant applications is also set for May 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. It will be held at the forest supervisor’s office on Forni Road.

In February, three environmental groups sued Eldorado. The lawsuit argues that forest officials are failing to properly manage off-road vehicle use.
