National Parks offering season pass

Before securing the camping gear to the top of the car this summer, vacationers should be forewarned they could save some money if heading to national parks.

The National Parks Service announced Tuesday that a $50 annual pass will allow unlimited vehicle access to the country’s 379 national parks.

The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite and other parks charge $20 for admission and there is an additional cost for campsites.

Without a pass, it would cost travelers $90 to visit Yosemite ($10), Sequoia ($20), Death Valley ($10), Grand Canyon ($20), Zion ($10), Bryce Canyon ($10) and Joshua Tree ($10).

“I think it’s a good value,” said Joel Hochanadel, account supervisor for Ogilve public relations who is working with national parks on the project.

He added that people who know they will be traveling extensively, purchase the pass because it’s a bargain and others invest because 80 percent of the proceeds go into funding the parks.

“It’s almost like a membership card,” Hochanadel said.

“As we celebrate these special places that help all Americans experience their heritage, it is fitting that we introduce the pass to build stronger connections between Americans and our national parks,” National Park Service Director said regarding National Parks Week, which is April 17-23.

The pass pays for every passenger riding in the car and includes a pop-out map of the parks, a vehicle decal and an offer for a free newsletter.

The pass can be purchased online at http://www.nationalparks.org, at national parks entrances or by phone at 1-888-GO-PARKS.
