Nation’s biggest I.D. theft case solved

A 40-year-old Christmas Valley woman was a victim of identity theft when someone stole her 1990 Chevy Suburban with her driver’s license and checkbook inside, an El Dorado County sheriff’s deputy said.

Lydia Bilbrey took a trip down to Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo on Aug. 8. She returned to her parking place to find her car gone. About two months later the Suburban was found by the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department.

The driver’s license and checkbook were missing. They were used to set up two Bank of America accounts in Richmond in her name, the deputy said.

On Oct. 19, someone wrote a check to Kmart in Pinole for $91.66 and a $163.92 check at the Pinole Target on Oct. 20, the deputy said. The two checks had different addresses on the same street and different ZIP codes.

Bilbrey did not know anything was wrong until a South Lake Tahoe Safeway clerk told her something suspicious came up when she ran the check, the deputy said.

Bilbrey reported this to the sheriff’s department last week. They called a Bank of America official who told them about the multiple accounts, but added that the accounts used by the thieves no longer exist.

Bilbrey could not be reached for comment.

It is not known if other accounts were set up in her name or if other checks were used.
