SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Lake Valley Fire Protection District battalion chief Gareth Harris has been selected to succeed Jeff Michael as district fire chief.

“I am pleased with the board’s decision,” Michael said. “Battalion chief Harris has a wealth of experience and knowledge, and I know he will serve the district and its constituents well.”

Harris came to the district in 2005 from Half Moon Bay Fire District where he served as division chief and fire marshal. Prior to Half Moon Bay, he had worked in the Sausalito Fire Department.

Michael will retire on June 24 after 31 years of service. This year Michael was awarded the distinguished alumni award from Lake Tahoe Community College for his work founding the school’s fire academy.

“I think the word I hear the most is bittersweet,” said Leona Allen, spokeswoman for the district. “Obviously he deserves his retirement, but we’re going to miss him.”
