New ski area proposed

Tribune News Service

A new ski resort, dubbed The Martis Ranch, has been proposed for the Martis Valley.

Sierra Pacific Industries, the largest landowner in the Martis Valley, wants to build 1,360 homes, according to planning documents. Included in that are 846 single-family vacation homes and a three-acre commercial site.

The proposal also includes the Martis Peak Ski Resort, with six lifts and a 12-acre “ski base, commercial/ hotel/ resort.”

Most of SPI’s land in the Martis Valley is zoned for timber production, a designation which does not allow ski lifts and runs. On Tuesday, however, the Placer County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to approve a zoning modification.

Martis Peak Road, a dirt road that runs northeasterly off of State Route 267 near Brockway Summit, would be the main access road to the development.
