New theater spells end to old Lakeside 4

Sally J. Taylor

South Shore residents won’t have the Lakeside 4 Theater to complain about much longer. The last film is scheduled to roll Aug. 24, the night before the Horizon Stadium Theater opens inside Horizon Casino Resort.

The old theater next to McDonalds at the “Y” was constructed in 1963. It’s been the subject of frequent complaints in recent years.

The owner of the theater has not been happy with the building either.

“It’s taken us eight years to build a new theater,” Wallace Theater Corporation founder Scott Wallace said last year when the Horizon theater plan was announced. At that time, Wallace joked that the demolition of the current structure would be cause for celebration.

Wallace purchased the Lakeside 4 Theater, Stateline Theater, and the now defunct Tahoe Cinema in 1991.

Just what will happen to the Lakeside 4 Theater has yet to be determined, said David Lyons, director of marketing for Wallace Theater Corporation II.

Stateline Theater will continue to operate for now, Lyons said.

That theater’s time could also be limited. It is scheduled for demolition to make way for the Park Avenue Redevelopment project, which is expected to include another eight-plex theater.

The opening of Horizon Theater increases the number of movies that can be shown on South Shore. However, with the loss of the Lakeside, moviegoers will have to go to the Stateline corridor to catch the latest flicks.
