New water tank to be built this summer

Gregory Crofton, Tahoe Daily Tribune

A new 210,000-gallon water tank will be constructed on Gardner Mountain, a neighborhood near the “Y,” starting in August.

The tank, which will be welded shut not bolted like older models, will decrease leaks, increase firefighting capability and provide a back-up water supply, said Dennis Cocking, information officer at South Tahoe Public Utility District.

Water pressure in the neighborhood will not change because of the new tank. It will be one of two serving the area, Cocking said. The other tank was replaced in 1994. STPUD has 22 water tanks at South Shore.

The $137,000 project approved Wednesday is expected to be complete by mid-October. It will go into use about a month after it is built, Cocking said.
