On Wednesday around 10 p.m. the South Lake Tahoe Police Department will be conducting a checkpoint at Highway 50 and Fairway Avenue across from Bijou shopping center to check for drunken drivers.

The department received grant money from the California Office of Traffic Safety to step up its efforts to curb the number of drunken drivers in South Lake Tahoe. The money will help fund overtime for officers at the checkpoint, one of several tools the department will utilize during the holiday season.

The checkpoint will run from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Officers will also check for drivers who do not have a valid driver’s license.
