Helicopter called for ladder-fall victim

The intersection of Black Bart and Pioneer Trail was closed for about 30 minutes Monday afternoon to make room for a CALSTAR helicopter to pick up a man who fell an estimated 15 to 20 feet from a ladder at a house along Sundown Trail, authorities said.



The busy road was closed shortly before 3 p.m.

CALSTAR took the unidentified man, whose injuries were not life threatening, to Washoe Medical Center in Reno for precautionary measures, according to Brad Zlendick, a captain with Lake Valley Fire Protection District.



High school hosts back-to-school night

Back-to-school night for South Tahoe High School is scheduled for Thursday as parents will have the opportunity to meet teachers, review course descriptions, course objectives, homework requirements and grading procedures.

The event is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Academy hosts open house

An open house at the Independent Learning Academy at the former site of Al Tahoe Elementary School is scheduled for Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. The academy, in its first year, is designed to house a majority of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District’s alternative education programs.

It caters to students enrolled in college prep high school classes, elementary and middle school home-schooled students and other independent learners. The program offers personalized curriculum, online courses, tutorial support and blended academic, athletic and extracurricular activities.

Fire district seeking volunteer firefighters

Lake Valley Fire Protection District is seeking volunteer firefighters. The LVFPD has three fire stations that cover 85 square miles of urban to wilderness areas. They run approximately 1,500 calls per year and have 28 full-time paid personnel.

A volunteer firefighter should be in good physical condition and possess a valid Emergency Medical Technician certification.

The volunteer firefighter will be asked to work one 24-hour shift per month upon the conclusion of a 12-week training academy.

The volunteer will also participate in fire department community programs from time to time.

Whittell open house slated for Thursday

George Whittell High School will hold an open house from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the school on Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove.
