Ng, Merkley earn gold medals at USASA nationals

Nancy Ng, Stone Merkley and Casey Weathers of the South Tahoe Snowboard Series are bringing home gold from the USASA National Championships at Copper Mountain, Colo.

At the halfway point of the weeklong championships, which have attracted more than 1,500 snowboarders and skiers from around the country, South Lake Tahoe’sMerkley claimed first place in slopestyle in the boys’ skier 10-12 age group.

South Shore’s Ng and Weathers of Mount Shasta have been double gold medal winners so far. Ng took first in the slalom and boardercross events in the masters women’s division, while Weathers finished on top of the podium in GS and slalom in the men’s jams 18-22 class.

Members of the South Tahoe series are grabbing their share of podium finishes as well. Randy Hess claimed third in the men’s 18-22 GS, Tony Piccinonno was runner-up in the boys’ 7-and-under division slalom and boardercross, Donna Vano placed second in both the slalom and boardercross for kahuna women; Tom Parachou took third in men’s open slalom, Zippy Neil was third in the kahuna women boardercross, Nora Anderson finished second in the girls’ 10-11 division boardercross, Taylor Chatwin claimed second in the girls’ 12-13 class boardercross; and Amy Purdy was third in the adaptive women’s boardercross.

Other results for South Tahoe Snowboard Series members in GS included Tess Weathers, ninth, open women; Dwayne Davis, 12th, open men; Tom Parachou, 21st, open men; and Denver Orr, 44th, boys’ 10-11 class.

In slalom, Vinny Piccinonno, ninth, boys 7 and under; Zennon Chatwin, fifth, boys 8-9; Neil, eighth, kahuna women; Tess Weathers, open women; Dwayne Davis, 11th, open men; and Orr, 39th, boys 10-11.

Additional slopestyle results included Anderson, fifth, girls 10-11; Lexi Hooper, fifth, girls 16-17; Sloane Niccoli, skier 9 and under; Taylor Chatwin, 17th, girls 12-13; Sawyer Cairns, 18th, skier 13-15; Conner McKeen, 35th, skier 13-15; Alec Bowman, 36th, skier 13-15; and Marco Gooding, 41st, boys 16-17;

In the boardercross, South Tahoe’s Sam Mason claimed fifth place in the boys’ 14-15 age division; Hooper, 10th, girls 16-17; Vinny Piccinonno, 11th, boys 7-and-under; Zennon Chatwin, 13th, boys 8-9; Matt Jones, 15th, boys 14-15; and Jessica Benefiel, 21st, girls 14-15;

Rounding out the halfpipe results, Tyler Wattanachinda placed sixth in the skier boys’ 9-and-under division; Niccoli, eighth, skier boys 9 and under; Merkley, 11th, skier boys 10-12; Bowman, 12th, skier boys 13-15; Jones, 16th, boys 14-15; Cairns, 19th, skier boys 13-15; Lukias Cook, 23rd, boys 10-11; Max Brejc, 24th, skier boys 10-12; Mason Niehoff, 27th, boys 12-13; Gooding, 30th, boys 16-17; and David Riegel, 43rd, boys 10-11.
