Nicholas John Fernandez

Nicholas John Fernandez of Stateline died Sept. 23, 2005, in South Lake Tahoe. He was 64.

Mr. Fernandez was born Aug. 19, 1941, in Petaluma, Calif. He came to Lake Tahoe on a vacation when he was 19 when his boat broke down. His father advised him to get a job, fix his boat and come home. He did the first two things his father asked. He never left Lake Tahoe.

He worked at Harvey’s Casino and Resort for 45 years, all the way up until the time of his death. He started as a dishwasher and advanced to sous-chef. He was good friends with Harvey Gross and cooked for him at many functions, including parties for Harvey’s Gun Club.

Mr. Fernandez loved golf, water sports and his dogs Shadow and Smokey, and his pride and joy Gus, who died last year.

He is survived by the love of his life, Bonnie Fernandez; his stepson Bob Ryan and his wife Karen of Sparks, Nev. He will be dearly missed by many, including his close friends Joe Wells, the executive chef at Harveys, and his wife Cindi.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Betty Fernandez of Stockton.

Contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Reno.

Private services will be held at a date to be announced.
