John O. Riebe, D.D.S.
Dr. John Riebe passed away peacefully on November 26th with Nancy, his wife of 62 years, and his children at his side. He had recently celebrated his 86th birthday.
As the youngest son of Rear Admiral H. Paul Riebe and Dorothy Osborn Riebe, John traveled extensively and lived in many places during his early years. The family eventually planted roots in Carmel, California where he attended Carmel High School. Every summer of his young life was spent at the family cabin at Echo Lake near Lake Tahoe where he enjoyed hiking, fishing, and hunting with his older brother Herb in the back country, racing his runabout boat, and working at Echo Chalet.
John attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where he met Nancy McPhilimy. They were married in 1956 and moved to San Francisco, where John attended the University of California Dental School. Upon graduation, he moved his family to Lake Tahoe where he practiced dentistry for the next 35 years.
Always creative and industrious, working long hours into the night after a long day at the office, he designed and built his family home. He also taught his children how to ski, canoe, hunt, and fish. They remember exciting snowmobile rides and wild hockey games on the nearby lagoon.
Nothing made John happier than an exciting sail on the lake in his beloved Falmouth Cutter sailboat with Nancy at his side. They sailed Lake Tahoe extensively, and as they became more competent, braved the waters of the San Juan Islands and Sea of Cortez.
Upon retirement, he decided to sell his practice and relocate to the lower altitude of Belgrade, Montana in 1998. He set off to select a site with a mountain view and began to design and oversee the building of their retirement home. In his final days he enjoyed watching the birds, deer, antelope and occasional elk herd from his windows. He also loved to spend time with his four grandchildren at the house during family gatherings.
John is survived by his wife Nancy, son Tom and wife Denise, son Dan and wife Tamara, daughter Kris and husband Stan, daughter Kathy and four grandchildren, Amanda, Paul and wife, Joey, Stanley and Kaitlyn. Other surviving family members include Viola Riebe, John and Glennys McPhilimy, Keith McPhilimy and wife Sveta, Marcia McPhilimy Morrison and husband, Jim.
