Leonard C. Wood

February 23, 1942 – September 17, 201

“Woody” passed away September 17th of cancer.

Born in Portland, Oregon, Woody served in the navy on a minesweeper during the Vietnam War. He was later a firefighter in Portland before forming his own fire and safety equipment company.

He moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1980 and worked for Caesar’s as a poker dealer then employee shuttle bus driver and limo driver where he met his future wife Billie Lawrence.

Woody moved to the Downieville area in the 80”s and in 1999 Billie and Woody married and built their dream home on gold mining property. Woody owned a delivery business the 49er stage for many years.

He is survived by his wife Billie, brother Stephen of Bend, Oregon and his 3 sons Greg, David and Ken of Portland, and stepdaughters Anita Watkins of Denver, Colorado and Lisa Backes of South Lake Tahoe. CA and grandkids Dustin Watkins of Travis AFB and Ashley Watkins of Hollywood, CA.

Woody spent his last few weeks of life at the Reno, NV. VA.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to the Reno VA in Woody’s name. A celebration of life will be held in the spring in Downieville for more info contact Lisa Backes at tahoe83@att.net
