Obituary: Daniel Hugh Mahoney

On Tuesday June 11, 2013 a beloved brother, an uncle to many, a great Dad to a few, a loving grandfather and overall, a wonderful man, Daniel Hugh Mahoney, passed away in San Diego, California due to heart complications. “Uncle Dan,” “Handy Dan,” “Dan the Man with the Plan”, “Teacher Dan”, whatever you want to call him, was a Great Dan. He was an amazing man; forever generous, thoughtful and caring.

Dan was born to Joseph and Phillis Mahoney in Klamath Falls, Oregon and celebrated his 80th birthday in May. He was from a large Catholic family and had 13 siblings, three survive him, Robert Mahoney, Mary Barni and Louise McEntee .

Out of high school, he joined the seminary but found he had other aspirations. Extremely bright, he worked his way through school attending UC Berkeley. He then enlisted in the army and was stationed in Chinon, France where he worked in the Chaplain’s office. Having time to socialize with the locals he became fluent in French. After 3 years, he returned home to attend graduate school at San Francisco State University where he received his Masters. Eager to give of his knowledge and insight, he became an award winning, charismatic, and compassionate teacher for almost 35 years.

While teaching, he met his beautiful and talented wife, Joan Murray aka Tacey Robbins, a gifted singer who toured all over the world. Dan realized one of his dreams to become a building contractor and with Joanie by his side, had a successful construction business. They specialized in building custom homes and also remodeled over 200 homes in the Lake Tahoe area. Dan adored his wife, Joanie, who sadly preceded him in death in 2008.

Dan was very honest, kind, charitable and hardworking. His greatest gift was his willingness to guide, teach, reach out and help others. His natural affinity to assist and provide loving guidance for his children, students, friends, coworkers, and others made people genuinely love him: those he touched found strength and direction in life. He will always be appreciated and remembered for his ear-to-ear heartwarming smile, playful sense of humor, loving nature and tender heart. He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed.

Dan and Joan are survived by their daughter Deborah Murray and son-in-law Stephen Fisher, their sons Sean and Dan Mahoney plus three grandsons Ryan, Kael and Brennen.

There will be a “Celebration of Life” for Dan and Joan in South Lake Tahoe July 30th. If you are interested in attending, please email Deb for details at On August 3rd in Klamath Falls Oregon, a mass will be held at 12 noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and committal to follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. If you would like to sign the guestbook, please go to
