Obituary: Irene M. Morris

A memorial service will take place Saturday June 29, 2013 for Irene M. Morris who passed away June 26, 2013 at Barton Memorial Hospital with her family at her side.

Irene was born February 24, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Mabel Whitlock. Irene lived through the 1930 depression. During that time one winter there was no heat or lights, 5 degrees below zero and Irene’s mother always prayed every day to thank God we have a roof over our heads. Her family moved to California in 1937. Irene joined the Job’s Daughters and received her Majority Degree. Irene attended Junior College. When World War II started, Irene worked as a Final Inspector of parachutes for the Armed Forces.

She married William Morris in 1945, had 3 children, 3 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and attended church all her life and served as the Luther league Advisor for 20 years.

Irene was the president of the PTA, served on the school board for one year, and received Life Membership in the PTA. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts for three years, and a Girl Scout leader for eleven years. Irene served as Worthy Matron for the Order of the Eastern Star for two terms, and was Deputy Grand Matron for the OES. She served as Mother Advisor for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls for nine years and received the Grand Cross of Color.

Her husband was a General Building Contractor for 54 years and Irene was the co-owner and office manager for Morris Builders.

The family moved to South Lake Tahoe, California in 1975. Irene and her husband celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2005.

Irene was President of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, and received the Woman of the Year Award. She was a Barton Hospital Auxiliary Member for over twenty years and served at the Hospital’s Gift Shop. Irene was a Women’s League Member for twenty years. She taught Sunday school for over 25 years a the Lutheran Church.

She joined Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra as a Charter Member in March, 1977, and served as the president from 1982-1983, and was awarded a Life Membership and Laural Society Member. She had 36 years of perfect attendance and gave the invocation over 26 of the 35 years she was a member.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Mabel Whitlock, brother Robert Whitlock, Jr., and loving husband of 60 years William M. Morris.

She is survived by three children, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday June 29, 2013, at Hope Lutheran Church of the Sierra, 930 Julie Lane, South Lake Tahoe.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hope Lutheran Church.
