Obituary: Kathy Bluethman

1963 – 2013

Kathy “Ms. B” Bluethman passed away in her home Wednesday May 29th at the age of 49. She is survived by her mother Val Naify, brother Breck Deming, brother John Breidenbach, nieces Samantha Breidenbach, Beth Hughes, nephew Michael Hughes, her partner Chris McCarthy, and her beloved dogs Zephyr and Lola.

Kathy was born in Escondido, Ca in 1963. She moved to South Lake Tahoe at the age of 9. She attended Tahoe Valley Elementary School, South Tahoe Middle School, and graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1981. She moved back to San Diego and graduated from Mesa Jr. College with an AA degree. She then graduated from San Diego State University in 1991 with a degree in Education.

Growing up Kathy was an avid skier, basketball cheerleader, and singer. During her college years, Kathy was very active in triathlons, marathons, half- marathons, century bike races, etc. She loved the outdoors and loved to compete.

After college, Kathy moved back to South Lake Tahoe to start her teaching career. She taught Physical Education and Science at South Tahoe Middle School for many years. She helped coach track and field, specifically the sprint runners, as well as girls’ volleyball. In 1998, she moved up to South Tahoe High School to teach PE. While there, she coached girls cross-country running.

Kathy relocated to Texas for two years, but realized that her home and her heart belonged in South Lake Tahoe. When she returned, she began substitute teaching in the Douglas County School District, working at LTCC in the Gym, and catering at Genoa Lakes Golf Course. After much perseverance, Kathy was offered a full-time job at George Whittell High School.

In 2008, Kathy suffered a traumatic brain injury following a motorcycle accident. She overcame many obstacles and returned to work at Whittell High School. She soon became Dean of Students and Athletic Director.

Kathy lived every day to the fullest. Each day was a gift, and she made the most of it. She changed the lives of many and has had a positive impact on this community. Every soul that she came into contact with felt her enthusiasm for life. Her smile will be forever engraved in the memory of all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 8th at George Whittell High School Football field at 10:00am. Parking will be limited, so carpooling is encouraged. Please bring beach chairs and beach blankets for seating. Dress attire should be casual and comfortable. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to George Whittell Athletic Department: Po Box 677 Zephyr Cove, NV 89448.
