Obituary- Gertrude E. Carneggie

Memorial services will take place Nov. 1 for Gertrude E. Carneggie, who died Sept. 19, 2003, at Barton Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility. She was 94.

Born Gertrude Elizabeth Huggler Oct. 18, 1908, at Ridgeway, Pa., she spent her childhood at Eureka, Calif., and graduated from Eureka High School. She married Merle M. Carneggie in February 1938. They lived in San Jose, Lodi and Los Molinos, Calif., before returning to Humboldt County in 1995, where she and her husband operated Pete’s Grocery Store in Pepperwood, Calif. Following the 1964 flood, which destroyed Pepperwood, she moved to Los Gatos, Calif., and worked as a house parent for 15 years at the Ming Quong Children’s Home before retiring and moving to Santa Cruz in 1987. Mrs. Carneggie moved to South Lake Tahoe in December 2002 to live with her son.

She was an adventurous women who was enthusiastic about her travels to Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and Alaska. She prized her 94 years of independence. She was devoted to her family, her friends and her church. She greatly enjoyed her active involvement and volunteer work with the Foster Grandparent Program in San Jose and the Santa Cruz Bible Church. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Noell of Palm Springs, Calif.; sons and daughters-in-law, Dave Carneggie and Bonnie Driscoll of South Lake Tahoe and Paul and Sharron Carneggie of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughter-in-law, De Carneggie of Danville, Calif.; brother, Harold Huggler of Loleta, Calif.; sister, Mildred White of Walnut Creek, Calif.; seven grandchildren, six step-grandchilden, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 21 years, Merle M. Carneggie in December 1959; and son, Joel R. Carneggie in March 1994.

Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. Nov. 1 at the Santa Cruz Bible Church in Santa Cruz. Interment is planned at a later date at Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka, Calif.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Santa Cruz Bible Church, 440 Frederick Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95062.
