Obituary — Lawrence G. "Larry" Cowley

A Celebration of Life memorial service will take place July 23 for Lawrence G. “Larry” Cowley, who died July 13, 2002, from traumatic injuries sustained when he was hit while crossing Highway 89 near the “Y.” He was 53.

Mr. Cowley was born June 11, 1949, to Ralph and Christine Cowley at East Orange, N.J. He was raised in West Orange, N.J. until his family moved to Sumter, S.C., where he graduated in 1967 from Sumter High School. He joined the Air force and served as a mechanic during the Vietnam era and was stationed at Lowrey AFB, Colo., and Edwards AFB, Calif. As a draftsman in the Air Force he designed and drafted the final plans for the development of Lowrey AFB Golf Course.

He had been a resident of South Lake Tahoe since 1970, when he first arrived with his wife, Kathleen Townsend, and fell in love with Lake Tahoe. He was employed by South Lake Tahoe Public Utility District for several years. As a master carpenter and member of the Lake Tahoe Carpenter’s Union, his carpentry work is now a part of many award winning homes and construction projects around the Lake Tahoe area, including Camp Richardson and Kirkwood. Additionally, he did freelance work for Anchor Printing.

Mr. Cowley had many talents and skills. He was an accomplished guitar player who jammed with many local bands and friends around the lake, he loved gourmet cooking, art and design, fishing on Lake Tahoe and playing on softball teams in his leisure time. He often provided temporary shelter for homeless people and animals. He especially loved dogs and had several longtime canine companion who predeceased him, including Misha, a red Chow, and Nikko, a white Samoyed. Mr. Cowley’s philosophical wit and humor will be missed by all those whom he loved, those friends whose lives he touched and musicians whom his music motivated and inspired.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Ralph and Carolyn Cowley of Sumter, S.C.; half brother, Douglas Cowley and his wife, Mari, and their two daughters, Kayla and Selena of Okinawa, Japan; his daughter, Dawn Cowley, grandson, Timothy, granddaughter, Rhiannon, and Dawn’s mother, Kathleen Townsend, all of Marysville, Calif.; longtime companion, Lili Saada of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Christine Cowley.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Marla LaRue at 5:30 p.m. July 23 at 921 James Ave., thanks to Jim and Judi Kerr and Pat’s Grass Lake Nursery.
