Services will take place May 1 for Margaret “Midge” Ellen Mercado, who died April 6, 2004, at Barton Memorial Hospital. She was 49.

Midge was born Sept. 2, 1954, at San Francisco, Calif., to Walter and Lillian Quandt. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1972. After attaining her bachelor of science degree in accounting at San Francisco State University in 1976, she immediately went to work for Mendleton & Zeller Corp., eventually earning a supervisor position in the payroll department. After a three-year courtship she married Jose L. Mercado May 29, 1976. Together they moved to South Lake Tahoe in November 1978, where she gave birth to and raised a son, Justin F. Mercado, and a daughter, Jennifer R. Mercado. She was employed by the South Lake Tahoe Unified School District, originally working at Al Tahoe Elementary School as an instructor’s assistant and receptionist from 1986 to 1994. She eventually became a receptionist and senior attendance assistant at South Tahoe Middle School, where she worked until her passing.

Midge enjoyed the outdoor life, whether it was camping, cooking over a fire, or riding with her husband on their Harley. She treasured the daily contact with school children. She touched many of their lives with her heart and helped give them guidance through the example she provided.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Jose L. Mercado; son, Justin F. Mercado of Reno. Nev.; daughter, Jennifer R. Mercado of Chico, Calif.; mother, Lillian R. Quandt; and brother and sister-in-law, Henry S. and Linda Quandt. She was predeceased by her father, Walter O. Quandt.
