OBITUARY: Rachael Rae Platt
Rachael Rae Platt of South Lake Tahoe passed away on January 10, 2012 as the result of a car accident.
Rachael and her twin Deanna Rae were born to Larry Myron Platt and Eileen Thomas Reed Platt October 26, 1979 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Rachael was born 5 minutes before Deanna, making her the “older sister.”
Rachael lived in a variety of cities and states during her young years including Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming. She especially loved her classes in drama, theatre, writing, music and poetry and in May of 1999, Rachael and her twin graduated from Grand Junction High School in Colorado.
After school, Rachael went to work for the Anaconda Montana Job Corp to become a painting apprentice, and she graduated on June 5, 2000.
Rachael and her twin wanted to go see their grandmother and older sister in Springfield, Oregon, and while on the train, met a middle aged man who told her all about South Lake Tahoe. Shortly thereafter, she and her two sisters drove here and arrived New Year’s Eve of 2000. While her oldest sister decided to go back to Springfield, Rachael and her twin sister decided to make Lake Tahoe their home.
In June of 2002, and not ready to settle down, Rachael wanted to see the world and travel. She got a job selling cleaner for Protec in San Francisco. While in San Francisco she met Jeff McDevitt and fell in love. While on their travels, Rachael found she was expecting and moved back to South Lake Tahoe and gave birth to her son Shawn Perry McDevitt on February 22, 2003.
Rachael enrolled at Lake Tahoe Community College and earned her teachers credentials. She worked as a preschool teacher at Kindertown, a private nanny, and at Heavenly as a daycare provider. Rachael wrote children’s books and was published through the Institute of Children’s Literature. She also had a love for singing and enjoyed performing the blues at Rojo’s on Wednesday nights. She was in the process of inventing a baby bottle.
In October of 2009, she was involved in a car accident which caused many health issues, and needed the care of her twin sister Deanna.
On December 16, 2011 Rachael and her son Shawn left for Bigfork, Montana to spend Christmas with Shawn’s father and for Shawn to spend time with his dad. Rachael was returning to Tahoe on January 10, 2012 when the accident occurred.
Rachael never gave up her dreams and she wanted to continue to write children’s books. She was a beautiful young woman, always had a smile, and loved her son and family. Her last words were she forgave and loved everyone and had the biggest smile on her face.
Rachael is survived by her son Shawn; parents Larry Platt (Martha) and Eileen Reed (Cliff); grandmother Leilani Platt; sisters Michelle, Deanna; half brother Timothy Dale Reed (Fallon); half sister Katrina Ellen Reed; and stepbrother Daniel.
